The SDSO is a dynamic regional orchestra of 80 professional musicians that performs in the acoustically superb Mary W. Sommervold Hall of the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The orchestra’s season consists of 7 Classical concerts, 4 Pops concerts, 3 Chamber concerts, family and educational concerts, special programs (Lakota Music Project and Music as Medicine), and regional tours. The SDSO enjoys a growing audience and enthusiastic community support. Concerts are broadcast on South Dakota Public Radio.


Administrative Positions:


Youth Orchestra Music Director & SDSO Assistant Conductor

The South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra Music Director/South Dakota Symphony Assistant Conductor is an educator and an artist who is passionate about orchestral music and truly enjoys working with young musicians. As Music Director of the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra (SDSYO), s/he is responsible for ensuring high quality musical experiences for young musicians. S/he will support and further the mission of the SDSYO through the development of strategic and educational initiatives, creation of dynamic recruitment and retention practices, building of lasting relationships throughout the community, and encouragement of young musicians to reach their potential. As Assistant Conductor of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO), s/he is an integral part of the organization’s artistic, educational, promotional, and audience and patron development initiatives. S/he will cover all SDSO programs, conduct designated pops and runout performances, and play a key role in the organization’s educational programming. Individuals who demonstrate efficiency, flexibility, creativity, effective communication skills, and a commitment to classical, pop, educational, and promotional orchestral performances and events will be successful in this position. S/he will report to the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Executive Director.

Community Engagement Manager

The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra invites applicants for the newly created position of Community Engagement Manager. This person is an innovative, resourceful individual responsible for designing, developing, and implementing the organization’s award-winning community engagement strategies. This collaborative professional works in close partnership with the Executive Director, Music Director, Director of Operations and Education, SDSO musicians, and guest artists to co-create programs to further develop the organization’s ability to serve its unique community. The SDSO Community Engagement Manager is responsible for the comprehensive management of the administrative details that the lead to the effective execution of SDSO community engagement programs; serves as primary point of contact for community partners; and develops effective program evaluation models.

Youth Orchestra Administrator & Production Assistant

The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra seeks an experienced individual for the position of Youth Orchestra Administrator/South Dakota Symphony Production Assistant. The Youth Orchestra Administrator manages the day-to-day activities, rehearsals, concerts, and scheduling of the four South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestras. The South Dakota Symphony Production Assistant is responsible for all staging requirements of the SDSO and SDSO Chorus – including technical elements and physical conditions –in multiple venues. The Production Assistant will also provide support with administrative details related to education/community engagement programming, tour planning, and production needs. The Production Assistant works with professional musicians and guest artists as well as administrative and technical staff.
