MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) is to provide musical opportunities through excellence in performance, education and leadership to the people of the state and region.
Since our modest beginnings at Augustana College eighty seasons ago, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra has blossomed into a highly esteemed orchestra, and nearly every concert features a major guest performer.
Today, the SDSO has over 90 talented members. Several guest conductors will lead the orchestra through an impressive season of concerts ranging from classics to pops. The orchestra performs all their concerts in the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science and has a season of 10 full orchestra concerts on Saturdays and 5 on Sundays. Plus, there are five chamber concerts and two special event performances.
Besides concerts, the SDSO offers extensive education programs for all ages - preschool through adult. Find out more by clicking on our "education and touring" headline.
The SDSO now has an official song. The piece titled, "Alleluias for Orchestra" was written by Stephen Yarbrough. The world premiere performance of this piece was in December 1999. It has since been performed by several high school orchestras and the National Symphony Orchestra.
