Bach’s B minor Mass Lenten Lecture Series 4
Sunday, April 9, 2017 – 6:00 PM
First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls
Please join SDSO Music Director Delta David Gier for lectures on Bach’s monumental “B minor Mass” during Lent. The March 26 lecture will discuss the “Osaana,” “Benedictus,” “Agnus Dei,” and the “Donna Nobis Pacem” with Father Charles Cimpl, Zachary Rygiel, J. Mark Bertrand, & Dr. John Christopherson (Senior Pastor, First Lutheran Church).
The “B minor Mass” represents the only time Bach, a Lutheran, set the full text of the Latin mass. Why did he do so–and at the very end of his career, at the height of his powers, with no commission nor occasion for performance? Knowing that the vast majority of Bach’s works were intended for corporate worship, how should we experience this piece today?
The Lenten Lecture Series will take place over four Sunday evenings, beginning March 19, and will feature several guest speakers.
