Bach’s B minor Mass Post-Concert Panel

Free Event

Sunday, April 23, 2017 – Post-Concert

First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls

Please join SDSO Music Director Delta David Gier for a lecture on Bach’s monumental “B minor Mass” following the matinee performance on April 23. The panelists include John Christopherson, Pastor of First Lutheran, Father Charles Cimpl, Pastor of Holy Spirit Parish, J. Mark Bertrand, Pastor of Grace Presbyterian, Delta David Gier, Music Director of the SDSO, and James Johnson, Chorus Master of the SDSO. Refreshments will be served.
The “B minor Mass” represents the only time Bach, a Lutheran, set the full text of the Latin mass. Why did he do so–and at the very end of his career, at the height of his powers, with no commission nor occasion for performance? Knowing that the vast majority of Bach’s works were intended for corporate worship, how should we experience this piece today?
