Music as Medicine

The South Dakota Symphony has partnered with Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center and Sanford Health to bring classical music and musicians to the campuses of both health care facilities through the new South Dakota Symphony program Music as Medicine.
The program kicks-off on Wednesday, January 4th. There will be Kick-Off Ceremonies on both campuses featuring 12 hours of music throughout the day. The Kick-Off Ceremony for Music as Medicine on the Avera campus will be held at the Avera Prairie Center Atrium at 11am. The Kick-Off Ceremony on the Sanford campus will be held in Sanford’s Locken Lobby at 1pm.
The mission of the South Dakota Symphony’s Music as Medicine program is to use music to create a positive impact on patient healing; to assist the South Dakota regional healthcare systems in creating a constructive environment in which to heal; and to allow the South Dakota Symphony to have a consistent presence in the healthcare systems of Sioux Falls and serve as a resource to its community.
Members and ensembles of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra, as well as symphony guest artists, will perform across the health care facilities. The scope of this project and the effect of music as an avenue for healing and comfort will extend to patients, families, staff, and visitors.
