Patricia Masek serves as both the SDSO Librarian and Second Flute. Following the completion her bachelor’s degree in Music Education at the University of Illinois and master’s degree in Flute Performance at the University of Kentucky, Masek was named Principal Flute of the SDSO. She remained in this position and was a charter member of the Dakota Wind Quintet in 1981. In 1972, Masek accepted the position of SDSO Librarian in addition to her playing duties and moved to playing Second Flute in 1984. This year, 2016, is the beginning of her 54th season with the orchestra. Masek is also Assistant Professor of Flute at Augustana University and operates a private flute studio in Sioux Falls.
When not playing flute, Masek enjoys travelling both internationally and domestically. She has been to London for many of the concerts of the BBC Proms for several years. She also enjoys taking bike trips to Europe and has visited most of the major cities of that continent. She also finds time to sightsee through North America and recently returned from a trip to New York City to see several shows on Broadway with her youngest grandson. Masek’s greatest joys are her sons and their families. She delights in spending time with her grandsons and enjoys the many years of making music with the SDSO.
