Strauss’ Don Quixote

Hannah Celeste Lu

Saturday, January 24, 2015 – 7:30 PM

Washington Pavilion

Event Overview:

Strauss’ tone poem, based on the classic Cervantes novel Don Quixote, creates an intricate and luxuriously detailed retelling through the voice of a solo cello. Hannah Lu returns to the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra to perform Górecki’s Symphony No. 3. This symphony reached No. 6 on the British pop charts, surpassing both Madonna and Michael Jackson. It evokes the turmoil and sadness of separation during war times and is as poignant today as it was the day it was written.

Strauss – Don Quixote, TrV 184, Op. 35 | Maxim Kozlov, cello
Górecki – Symphony No. 3, Op. 36 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) | Hannah Lu, soprano
