WHO WE ARE

Backed by the award-winning South Dakota Symphony, the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestras (SDSYO) are an elite, new music program for grades K-12. Divided into four groups, students will be placed in an orchestra based on their musical ability, enriching their skills and love of music.

Youth Orchestra, Dr. Christopher Stanichar
Top level orchestra.  Advanced full orchestra (stings, winds, percussion). Suggested Suzuki levels 5-6.

Philharmonia, Mr. Jeffrey Paul

Intermediate full orchestra (strings, winds, percussion). Suggested Suzuki levels 3-4.

Sinfonia, Mr. Mark Isackson and Dr. Harvey Jewell
Advanced beginner string level. Suggested Suzuki levels 2-3.

Prelude Strings, Mr. Jay Reeve
Beginning string level. No experience necessary. Music-reading preferred. Suggested Suzuki level 1.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Led by respected SDSYO music director and composer Christopher Stanichar, as well as five other dedicated conductors, SDSYO members will improve their technical skills while performing high level musical pieces with their peers.

  • Learn from South Dakota Symphony musicians in workshops and master classes.
  • Get a chance to work with or watch Symphony guest artists.
  • Perfect your skills for music camp opportunities, scholarships and All-State Orchestra and Band.

Youth Orchestra - $300 per student ($250 for students in marching band)
Philharmonia - $250 ($200 for students in marching band)
Sinfonia - $200
Prelude Strings - $75 (Spring semester only)

Since we encourage families to attend South Dakota Symphony concerts together, SDSYO members also receive a free series ticket if one of their parents is a subscriber. Call the Symphony office for details.
