South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra

EVENT OVERVIEW:

Shostakovich / Festive Overture

David M. Gordon / FABULAR ARCANA (World Premiere)
Paul Sánchez, piano

Rachmaninoff / Symphony No. 2

Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony is not only one of the most popular works of its kind ever written, it is a triumph of the human spirit. Shattered by the disastrous premiere of his First Symphony (“the most agonizing hour of my life”), Rachmaninoff fell into a deep depression and struggled daily to write a page of music worth keeping. With the help of hypnosis, Rachmaninoff eventually recovered to write his best-loved works for piano and a symphony for the ages.  David M. Gordon’s piano concerto, Fabular Arcana, features South Dakota native Paul Sánchez.

The SDSYO will join their professional counterparts for Shostakovich’s Festive Overture.  An extra special way to enjoy this concert as these students continue to expand their skills and love for classical music.
