Shostakovich Festival

Explore the tumultuous life and times of Dmitri Shostakovich with the SDSO and renowned scholar Joseph Horowitz (who expertly set the stage for a triumphant performance of Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony in February of 2023) through multi-media presentations, live performances, and discussions.  Hear Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 in the Washington Pavilion, and take in a screening of classic 1929 Soviet cinema The New Babylon - which magnificently pairs propaganda with art - with Shostakovich's score performed live, including a history on the Paris Commune and other musical excerpts, as part of "The New Babylon Series". In the short-lived Commune of Paris, a conscripted solider falls in love with a Communard saleswoman. 
As the army cracks down on the revolutionaries, the soldier is forced to fight against the Commune, 
and the pair's love is put to the test.
