Tchaikovsky / Symphony No. 6 (Pathetique)

Sibelius described the mood of his sixth symphony as "cold spring water".  Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 was the result of a creative explosion.  About this work, he writes, "...it is rare for me to write anything with such love and enthrallment.  I can honestly say that never in my life have I been so pleased with myself, so proud, or felt so fortunate to have created something as good as this".  Between these two great symphonies, SDSO premieres a work by University of South Dakota composition professor Paul Lombardi.

"I have put my whole soul into the symphony." - Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky
